Smith graduated from FIU with a bachelor of arts degree in criminal justice and a master of science in sports management. He played defensive line for FIU from 2008 - 2012 and was part of the 2010 Panthers team that won the Little Caesar's Bowl in Detroit, Michigan after claiming the 2010 Sun Belt Conference Championship.

A native of Jackson, MS, Smith and his wife Stephanie have two children, Zuri (3) and Kasen (11 months).
